Biographic details
Karlis commenced at the University of Melbourne in May 2005 after holding a QEII Fellowship funded by the ARC from 2000 to 2004.
Having completed a Masters of Engineering Science (Monash University, Australia) and PhD (University of Stony Brook, USA) on hydroxyapatite, the interest has continued to further address the composition, processing and properties of this material that every person carries in their bones and teeth. The main activity lies in the development of materials primarily for the biomedical industry and has included work on coatings, particles, porous materials, influence of manufacturing on materials properties and is continuing in the realm of microfabrication.
Karlis had conducted research projects at The Technical University of Riga in Latvia, Technical University of Aachen in Germany, University of Stony Brook in USA, Technical University of Tampere in Finland, University of Limoges in France, University of Technology in Sydney, Australia and Monash University.
Research interests
Research is addressing apatites, biomaterials and advanced manufacturing. Apatite is a natural material that is little understood. It exists in hard tissues and minerals, and used in implants and for fluorescent lighting. Present work is addressing sterilization, microstructure and topography of hydroxyapatite for biomedical applications.
Other biomaterials work has addressed the fabrication of microspheres for cancer therapy and porous materials for tissue engineering applications.
Since material properties are dependent upon the process that has been used for manufacture, a process that can control the microstructure is essential for advanced materials.
Ongoing interest is addressing the ability to fabricate and control the microstructure at the microlevel, to deposit a combination of different materials, produce functionally graded and smart materials at the micro level. More projects and information
